Issues around “School nah scam” ideology
Have you heard the sentence “School nah scam” from several students? Yes that is the view of most students to schooling. There is nothing in their environment to motivate them towards schooling.
Imagine a young boy whose elder brother has graduated from higher institution but without a job that commands respect. The level of unemployment in Nigeria is a concern. How will a university Graduate got a job that will pay him not up to $100 as salary. On the other hand, there a people of the age mate of the university Graduate that might just be college graduate who rather than continue in furthering his studies decide to go learn a skill, say carpentry who now does well financially than the Higher institution Graduate. The number of unemployment keep increasing.
This is the environment where many students lives and for that reason doesn’t see any reason to take schooling serious since they know quite well that they will end up financially stranded later in life just as others that have gone before them.
But, it is necessary to remember that the progress and continual progress of any society is in a good sense tied to the educational system of the society and the educational background of the citizens.
If the “School nah scam” ideology which interpret to schooling as been a place where deceit abounds then we need to strategically look into this issue as a society.
But, the real fact is people only pay for value and if the educational system has not look into how to embed value as training into students this matter will remain.
Furthermore, in correcting the “School nah scam” ideology, it is essential that Government is deliberate in providing both an environment for value and job opportunities with good return for as many student as possible after school.
With this in place we can be sure of a Country with intellectuals who are driven to creating a better world.
